Summer Cooling

thermometerAs summer quickly approaches, homeowners should be reminded that Air Conditioners need service too! Some quick tips to ensure a more efficient cooling season:
  1. Clean the condenser: One of the most overlooked parts of your cooling system is the condenser. This sits outside year round and collects dirt, leaves and grime. A quick blast with a water hose and removing debris from around the unit will make it perform at its best.
  2. Shade: When building a home, locate the compressor on the North side of the building, or alternatively the east side. This will help shade the unit and keep it out of direect sunlight during its peak operating times.
  3. Filters:Change your furnace filter more frequently during the summer months. THe fan motor actually turns at a higher RPM during the cooling cycle, moving more air and trapping more dirt. A dirty filter can cut your cooling efficiency drastically!
  4. Yearly Servicing: You should have your system professionally serviced yearly. The technician can make sure the refrigerant levels are within norms. He can alert you to possible leaks and prevent you from breakdowns during the hot summer months. A good service company will oil your blower motor and clean the evaporator coils. This may be at an added cost, but worth it.
